Tasmanian Olympic rower Simon Burgess punched ex-wife in the face eight times in brutal attack

A Tasmanian court has heard details of an attack by former Olympic rowing medallist Simon Burgess on his ex-wife.

Burgess, 57, pleaded guilty to several charges, including breaching a domestic violence order, criminal damage and assault, relating to the December 2023 incident.

According to AAP, the court heard that Burgess entered the victim’s Huon Valley home while she was in her bedroom at night.

Burgess, wearing black rubber gloves, reportedly straddled the woman and hit her in the head eight times, doing so every time she said something he didn’t like.

With a clenched fist he punched a hole in the wall above the bed and handed over a piece of paper on which was written “you’re about to choke on this”, referring to discussions about dividing up the property.

The victim managed to free himself and flee the house, stopping his car and calling for help.

Burgess’s lawyer, Philippa Morgan, painted a contrasting picture in her sentencing submission, highlighting Burgess’ successful rowing career and close family relationships.

Morgan admitted that Burgess struggled with mental health issues and alcohol abuse following the breakdown of his marriage, saying he feared losing the family farm and believed a divorce would be a disaster.

Judge Andrew McKee granted Burgess bail and adjourned sentencing until October.

Burgess has his own statue in Geeveston town centre and is a two-time world champion.

There is a Burgess monument in the centre of Geeveston town commemorating his achievements.
