Firefighters are currently battling a blaze that has engulfed a house in Hobart’s northern suburbs.

Crews from Bridgewater and Glenorchy were called to the Gagebrook address on Tottenham Road just after 11.30am.

On site, it turned out that half of the house was on fire.

Thick, black smoke hangs in the air. Authorities are asking residents to avoid the smoke if possible.

“Smoke from this fire is visible in Gagebrook and surrounding areas,” TFS warned.

“There is no risk to the general public. People who do not need to be in the vicinity should stay away.”
