Eagles veteran Darling officially files AFL trade request

West Coast Premier League forward Jack Darling is set to end his AFL career with North Melbourne after formally requesting a trade.

The 32-year-old has one year left on his contract but is keen to sign a multi-year deal with the Kangaroos after undergoing a medical at Arden Street this week.

On Wednesday, the Eagles confirmed Darling’s trade request in a brief statement.

“The club will now work with North Melbourne to facilitate this request during next month’s player exchange period,” West Coast said in a statement.

Darling has struggled for form this year and was dropped from the team when interim coach Jarrad Schofield replaced Adam Simpson.

He scored 22 goals in 21 games for the Eagles, who finished third from bottom, ahead of North Melbourne and last-placed Richmond.

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson has tapped Darling to add experience to his roster of young players, with the veteran expected to back up forward Nick Larkey.

Darling, who made his AFL debut in 2011, ranks second in West Coast history in terms of games played (298) and goals scored (333) for the club.

He will fall just short of becoming just the second Eagles player, following 2018 captain Shannon Hurn (333), to reach the 300-game playing milestone.

Darling this week described himself as “resilient” and vowed to extend his career as long as possible.

“If it’s another two or three years at North, I think it’ll be good for me and my family,” Darling told Channel 10.

The off-season is shaping up to be a busy one for West Coast, with reports suggesting they remain three candidates – Andrew McQualter, Hayden Skipworth and Steven King – in their search for a new coach.

The Eagles are keen to sign Richmond free agent Jack Graham, while fellow Tigers and WA graduates Liam Baker and Shai Bolton have also been linked with a move to their home state.

Elsewhere, Sydney’s Harry Cunningham has signed a new two-year contract that will keep him with the club until the end of 2026.

The 30-year-old made 206 appearances for the Swans across 13 seasons.

Gold Coast duo Nick Holman and Sean Lemmens have signed one-year contract extensions, keeping them at the club until the end of 2025.
