BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The state Department of Transportation reported road closures in Brunswick County on Wednesday.

Battle Whitley, a maintenance engineer, spoke on U.S. 17, which is still closed near Town Creek.

The closure severed a vital connection in Brunswick County, leaving many drivers stranded. The main thoroughfare remains flooded with several feet of water as of Wednesday.

Whitley said construction is already underway on some roads.

“As far as the repair schedule goes, we’ve already started. In fact, we’re hoping to get one repair done today on NC 211 near Southport,” Whitley said.

As for U.S. 17, Whitley said DOT engineers are still waiting for water to recede to assess potential damage.
