Footage shows former South African Liberal Party leader taking a sip from a plate, but claims it’s a deepfake

South Australia’s Opposition Leader has said he is concerned about the release of a video that appears to show his predecessor David Speirs snorting vodka from a plate.

The video was posted online by News Corp, which said it was recorded in June at his home.

Mr Speirs has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, and reportedly told News Corp. that it was a “deepfake,” or artificially generated video, and described it as “very disturbing.”

“It certainly wasn’t me,” Mr Speirs told the Advertiser.

“It’s very strange… I would never do that. I’m terrified of it.

“This really worries me.”

The ABC has contacted Mr Speirs, the member for Black in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, for comment.

Mr Speirs resigned as leader of the Liberal Party at the end of last month and was succeeded by Vincent Tarzia.

Mr Tarzia said in a statement that if the recording was fake, Mr Speirs should “report the matter to the appropriate authorities”.

“Any suggestion of this type of activity worries me and my party takes these matters very seriously,” Mr Tarzia said.

“This is a matter for Mr Speirs and if this is a forgery, Mr Speirs should report the matter to the appropriate authorities.

“Until all the facts are known, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Mr Speirs resigned as leader of the Liberal Party in early August, saying he was “heartbroken” and no longer had the strength to continue in the role.

Late last week he said there should be “serious consideration” given to a federal takeover of the South African Liberal Party branch.
