Midcoast girls soccer teams record clean sheets in season opener

While the golf teams have been competing for more than a week now, other high school fall sports teams are also competing.

Starting last Thursday, teams from across the Central Coast began competing on fields, tracks and courts.

Here’s how they did:

GIRLS FOOTBALL

MOUNT ARARAT 7, LEWISTON 0: Katherine Theriault, Emma Berry and Islah Godo each scored twice for Mt. Ararat (1-0) in its season opener against Lewiston (0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 7. Julianna Allen scored the Eagles’ seventh goal.

Lewiston goalkeeper Emily Desroisers stopped 13 of 20 shots on goal.

MORSE 3, LINCOLN ACADEMY 0: Zoe Nicholson had a hand in each of the Shipbuilder goals, scoring in the first half and assisting Shaelyn Brochu with one goal in each half as Morse (1-0) defeated Lincoln Academy (0-1) on Friday, Sept. 6.

Lincoln Academy goalie Margaret Thompson had seven saves, while Morse’s Hannah Keller had five. Morse’s Selah Park helped defend the defense, shutting down Lincoln’s offensive attack.

BRUNSWICK 2, MESSALONSKEE 0: Molly Tefft and Riley Hall scored goals Thursday, Sept. 5, to power Kevin Bachman to a victory over Messalonskee (0-1) in his first game as head coach of Brunswick (1-0).

FOOTBALL FOR BOYS

LEWISTON 2, MOUNT ARARAT 1: Senior Ethan Berry scored with seven minutes remaining to secure the win for Mt. Ararat (0-1), but it wasn’t enough to defeat defending Class A champion Lewiston (1-0) on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Seniors Annimer Ibrahim and Tegra Mbele scored in the second half for Lewiston. Mbele was assisted by sophomore Dan Dimandya.

MORSE 1, LINCOLN ACADEMY 0: Like the girls team, Morse (1-0) held Lincoln Academy (0-1) to a point on Friday, Sept. 6. Senior Ellis Vallade scored the only goal of the game on a set piece just before the end of the first half.

BRUNSWICK 2, MESSOLONSKEE 0: Brunswick (1-0) traveled to Messalonskee (0-1) and scored both goals in the first half on Thursday, September 5.

FIELD HOCKEY

LAWRENCE 11, MORSE 0: High school senior Maddie Niles scored seven goals as Lawrence (1-1) beat Morse (0-2) on Saturday, Sept. 7. Niles’ score set a new school record and tied the Maine state record set in 1975 by Jean Beaulieu of Madawaska.

Morse, a team whose 11 of 16 players are underclassmen, lost 23-0 in its first two games of the season.

MOUNT ARARAT 2, CAMDEN HILLS 0: Freshman Kamryn Chase scored both goals for Mt. Ararat (1-0) in its season-opening win over Camden Hills (0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 7. Chase was assisted by sophomores Krystah Coen and Sarah Middleton.

Mt. Ararat sophomore goalie Laila Adams had two saves; Camden Hills sophomore goalie Abby Strout had six saves.

LISBON 9, TELSTAR 0: Riley Hoyle is already halfway to her 2023 goal tally, having scored four goals and assisted in Lisbon’s 1-0 win over Telstar on Friday, September 6. Five other Greyhounds players scored, including Alivia Saunders, who also had two assists.

Telstar goalkeeper Cadie Campbell saved 28 shots, Lisbon goalkeeper Sophia Cote saved one.

BRUNSWICK 0, LEWISTON 0: The Dragons (0-0-1) and Blue Devils (0-0-1) opened the season with a draw after a scoreless double-overtime match on Thursday, September 5.

In overtime, Brunswick was forced to play defense, preventing seven of Lewiston’s corner kicks from resulting in goals.

FREE PORT 2, YARMOUTH 1: Freeport (1-0), the defending Class B champions, opens the season with a one-goal road win over Yarmouth (0-1).

FOOTBALL

OCEANSIDE 30, BRUNSWICK 14: Veteran quarterback and current wide receiver Zeb Foster (287 total yards, 3 rushing TDs) and veteran quarterback Robert Blair (178 total yards, TDs) scored in the second half to lift Oceanside (1-0) to a victory over Brunswick (0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 7.

In their first football match with an 11-man squad since 2022, the Dragons tied 14-14 with the 2023 Class C runner-up but only scored one more first down.

Brunswick wide receiver Trevor Gerrish (5 receptions, 128 yards, 2 TDs) converted two short passes from senior quarterback Cam Beal (6-7, 131 yards, 2 TDs) for scores of 38 and 64 yards.

MOUNT ARARAT 54, MORSE 14: Running backs Dash Farrell (8 carries, 168 yards, 3 TDs) and Nick Doughty (5 carries, 153 yards, 3 TDs) led Mt. Ararat (1-0) to a 40-point victory over Morse (0-1) on Friday, Sept. 6.

The Eagles did not throw a single pass and rushed for 423 total yards. Junior Avery Desjardins contributed 74 yards and a touchdown for an Eagles offense that rushed for 423 yards and did not attempt a single pass.

Senior Phillip Edelblut forced Morse into a fumble near the end zone, and junior Adrian Reyes had two catches on Morse quarterback Dylan Root (10-15, 150 yards, 2 TDs).

CROSS-COUNTRY RACE

The Brunswick boys and Morse girls won the six-team KVAC meet in Brunswick. Pierce Coughlin of Messalonskee (16:23.60) and Karen Higgins of Boothbay/Wiscasset (18:53.00) were the top finishers.

Sam Cashman led the Brunswick team with a third-place finish (16:43.50), Morse’s Levi Riggs took fourth (16:53.80), and the rest of the Brunswick athletes finished fourth through eighth, scoring 29 points. Morse finished third with 62 points.

Zoe Avery of Morse finished sixth (21:51.90), with teammate Frida Wright right behind her in seventh (21:57.20). The other Shipbuilders finished in the top 12, scoring 45 points. The Brunswick girls finished fourth with 95 points.

The Freeport boys and girls cross country teams won the 12-team WMC by 45 and 34 points, respectively, on Thursday, Sept. 5. Lilah Hall (21:15) and Ella Oshetski (21:19) took first and second in the girls race, while Alex Gilbert (17:00) and Conner Smith (17:08) took second and third in the boys race.

The Lisbon boys won the four-team MVC meet in Maranacook on Friday, Sept. 6. Samuel Liudvinaitis finished second (18:43.30) and Malachi Ganong third (19:25.10). Lisbon scored 36 points.

Mt. Ararat won the girls’ three-team event at Edward Little on Friday, September 6. The boys team finished second out of four teams. Charlotte Crowe (23:45.63) and Ian Britt (18:15.94) were the top finishers, taking second and fourth place, respectively.

GOLF

MORSE 8, OCEANSIDE 1: After losing its opening match to Leavitt, Morse (4-1) has won four in a row. Seniors Caleb Harvey and Tuck Walker have been co-low medalists in their last two appearances, with scores of 38 against Cony (Thursday, Sept. 5) and 42 against Oceanside (Friday, Sept. 6).

MOUNT ARARAT 4.5, BRUNSWICK 4.5: Defending Class A individual champion Will Farschon of Brunswick earned low medal honors in the match on Thursday, Sept. 5. After a 182-shot tie, Mt. Ararat won in tiebreakers.

VOLLEYBALL

HAMPDEN ACADEMY 3, BRUNSWICK/MONT. ARARAT/MORSE 0: The co-op team (0-1) lost to Hampden Academy (1-0) in three sets on Thursday, September 5.
